The academic year officially commenced this week, marking a significant milestone for Milne Bay Teachers College. On Monday, February 17th, 2025, a dedicated team of six academic staff and two support staff conducted the orientation, welcoming the pioneer students to the institution.
In a heartfelt address, the Principal clearly articulated the institution's vision to produce competent teachers who are pedagogically skilled, ethically shaped, and morally informed futures. Emphasizing the moral obligation of teaching to shape children holistically, the Principal encouraged students to aspire to be different so they can make a difference in inspiring future students. "We want to make this institution unique. Our discipline measure must be focused on rehabilitation. Termination of students is the last resort," stated the Principal. He elaborated on the unique approach to discipline, which includes a two-month rehabilitation program at pastoral centers for students who breach college rules. This program aims to immerse students in the priestly life, improving their social values before they return to continue their studies. Repeated violations may lead to tougher sanctions.
Mr. Sean Ova, the Director of Academics, highlighted the importance of the Academic Integrity policy, urging students to uphold the institution's academic integrity by preventing cheating, fraud, and plagiarism. During the orientation, the grievance policy, assessment process and procedures, and college routine were also shared with the students.
Students expressed their excitement about the availability of Wi-Fi connectivity on the first day of the academic week. Mr Anda Apule, Deputy Principal announced that formal lectures would commence on Tuesday, with late registration extended to next week.
The official commencement of the academic year sets the stage for a promising journey ahead, as students and staff work together to deliver Diploma in primary teaching program.
